- 시료가 녹아 있는 액체를 이동상으로 하여 펌프를 이용 고압의 일정한 유속으로 밀어서 충진제가 충진되어 있는 고정상인 컬럼을 통과시켜 친화도에 따라 다른 시간대별로 통과하는 원리를 이용한 후 검출기에 의해 정성 및 정량 분석하는 장비
- 질량분석기는 시료 주입구, 이온화를 시키는 본체, 시료를 비전하에 값에 따라 분리하게 하는 질량 측정기, 비전하의 값을 분석하는 검출기로 구성
- 액체크로마토그래프에서 혼합물을 분리하고, 분리된 각 분석물질은 이온화 장치에서 전하를 띤 이온을 생성, 이 이온들은 질량분석기에서 질량 대 전하의 비로 분리되어 스펙트럼으로 제공하며 시료성분의 분자량, 구조적인 정보 등을 통해 정성 및 정량적인 정보를 얻는데 사용
